McAllister, 619/453-9191 ANDATACO BECOMES VALUE-ADDED RESELLER FOR CRAY RESEARCH SUPERSERVER SYSTEM CS6400 Systems Will Be Most Powerful Sold by ANDATACO EAGAN, Minn., and SAN DIEGO, Calif., May 10, 1994 -- Cray Research, Inc. (NYSE:CYR) and ANDATACO announced today that the two companies have signed a value-added reseller (VAR) agreement for ANDATACO to resell CRAY SUPERSERVER 6400 (CS6400) systems. As part of the agreement, ANDATACO will augment the CS6400 systems with its leading-edge hardware and software storage solutions and resell the integrated systems to the worldwide commercial UNIX marketplace. The CS6400 system represents the highest end in ANDATACO's product line, which includes HP 9000 Series 700 and 800 products, as well as a full line of SPARC workstations. "We are pleased to have ANDATACO selling our high-end SPARC/Solaris- compliant systems and look forward to this relationship producing solid results," said A.J. Berkeley, senior director of sales and marketing for Cray Research Superservers (CRS), the Cray subsidiary that developed and manufactures the CS6400 system. "ANDATACO's position as a manufacturer/system and network integrator who provides total system solutions, including disk, tape and optical configurations to meet the end user's needs, made us a natural choice to resell the CRAY SUPERSERVER 6400," said W. David Sykes, president of ANDATACO. "Our sophisticated customer base demands the highest level of computing power available in a server. With the CS6400's industry-leading scalability and performance and our worldwide, face-to-face sales force, CRS and ANDATACO will make a strong team," Sykes added. The CS6400 system, announced in October 1993, was developed by CRS under a technology agreement between Cray Research and Sun Microsystems, Inc. The CS6400 system is a binary-compatible upward extension of Sun Microsystems' product line and is available with four to 64 SuperSPARC processors, up to 16 billion bytes (gigabytes) of memory, a peak system bandwidth of 1.76 gigabytes per second, and a peak memory bandwidth of 1.28 gigabytes per second. The CS6400 is the world's fastest and most expandable SPARC/Solaris- compliant system available today and embodies advanced technology from Sun and Cray Research, two computer industry leaders, Berkeley said. The CS6400 is ideally suited for commercial applications such as online transaction processing (OLTP), decision support systems (DSS), online analytical processing (OLAP), and high-capacity file service and communication services. Recently, the CS6400 achieved the fastest-ever performance on the SPECrate92 benchmarks -- 90 percent faster on the integer benchmark and 35 percent faster on the floating-point performance than previously recorded. That record still stands, Berkeley said. The new system leverages SPARC's leadership in the RISC market and can run, without modification, all applications developed on SPARC/Solaris systems. In addition, he said "the CS6400 system delivers features to the open systems environment that data centers have enjoyed for years, such as high-availability, high-performance networking, dependable tape and storage management, and batch processing -- all technologies for which Cray Research is well-regarded." Berkeley said the VAR agreement with ANDATACO is part of the global sales and marketing plan for CS6400 systems. Plans call for a mix of distribution channels including: a CRS-dedicated international sales force; selling through the Cray Research sales force; developing a global network of systems integrators and value-added resellers (VARs); and joint initiatives with Sun Microsystems, he said. Headquartered in San Diego, Calif., ANDATACO services workstation users from 15 sales and service offices across the United States and through worldwide business affiliates in Europe, Asia, Canada, and Australia. ANDATACO is a leading manufacturer of Smart Storage Solutions for client server computing and continues to be the leading integrator of networking and workstation technologies for mission critical and high-performance applications.
