Cray/Media: Mardi Larson, 612/683-3538 BMC Software/Media: Lisa Cradit, 713/918-4228 CRAY ANNOUNCES AVAILABILITY OF BMC SOFTWARE'S APPLICATION AND DATA MANAGEMENT PRODUCTS ON CS6400 DATABASE SERVERS SAN JOSE, Calif., July 24, 1995 -- Cray Research, Inc. announced today that it has signed an agreement with BMC Software, Inc. to offer BMC Software's application and data management product lines -- PATROL and MetaSUITE families -- on the CS6400 enterprise database servers. Cray said that these software tools are important in providing an integrated application and system management solution for very large database applications with its line of SPARC/Solaris database servers. Last week, BMC Software announced its Preferred Partner Program, of which Cray Research is a member. This program targets both open systems and mainframe product solutions, including BMC Software's PATROL family of application management products and the company's MetaSUITE family of data management products, BMC Software officials said. The program is important to Cray Research with its aggressive push to bring the commercial marketplace a high-end open systems database server solution with the CS6400 system operating the leading merchant database systems such as those from Oracle Corp. and Informix Software, Cray said. "Our CS6400 enterprise database servers are the most scalable and capable open database servers on the market today," said Jeff Pancottine, director of marketing for Cray's Business Systems Division. "These systems are being deployed at world-class companies like Bank of America, AAA, and others for data warehousing and OLTP applications supporting thousands of users accessing very large databases of hundreds of gigabytes and more. These environments can create application management and system administration challenges. BMC's suite of software tools provides an excellent method to integrate the management of open systems in heterogeneous environments and are assisting us in providing full solutions to the commercial marketplace." "This announcement is the first step in what we feel will be a long and mutually beneficial relationship between BMC Software and Cray. It will give our customers integrated, best of breed' products for efficient management across the enterprise," said Bob Beauchamp, director of strategy and market development for BMC Software. "With Version 3.0 of PATROL, we included significant enhancements and new functionality to ensure greater depth and breadth of the product. The availability of PATROL on Cray database servers is proof positive that PATROL is a highly scalable, robust product perfectly suited for large-scale environments." The PATROL suite of application management products automates and centralizes the control of all the critical elements in a distributed environment -- data, databases, servers, applications and networks. The PATROL architecture consists of intelligent agent(s), management consoles(s) and Knowledge Modules. The MetaSUITE of data management products allow DBAs to automate many of the routine tasks associated with database administration and management. MetaDESK is the base product in the MetaSUITE family and provides efficient, consistent database discovery, monitoring and browsing across multiple heterogeneous databases from a single graphical user interface. MetaMANAGE provides advanced database administration and manipulation across multiple heterogeneous databases. BMC Software, Inc. (NASDAQ:BMCS) is a worldwide developer and vendor of Cooperative Enterprise Management Solutions (CEMS) that automate application and data management across heterogeneous legacy and open systems environments. BMC Software is cooperating with leading vendors throughout the computer industry to provide its customers with integrated enterprise-wide data, system, application and network management solutions. The company is headquartered in Houston, Texas, and offers more than 80 products. Cray Research provides the leading high-performance computing tools and services to help solve customers' most challenging problems. Data warehousing, decision support, transaction processing and multimedia applications which challenge current technologies are the targets for Cray Research's new line of highly scalable CS6400 systems. ### BMC Software, the BMC Software logo and all other products or service names are registered trademarks or trademarks of BMC Software, Inc. in the USA and other select countries.
