JAPAN'S CHIBA UNIVERSITY INSTALLS EIGHT CRAY RESEARCH SYSTEMS First Time Systems This Powerful Are Dedicated To General Education At A University EAGAN, Minn., April 14, 1994 -- Cray Research Inc. (NYSE:CYR) announced today that Japan's Chiba University has installed eight CRAY EL92 deskside supercomputing systems and later this quarter is scheduled to install one CRAY SUPERSERVER 6400 (CS6400) all to be used for general education. This is the first time anywhere in the world that a university has dedicated a Cray Research system to this activity. The installed Cray Research systems will be used for computational science education as part of Chiba University's required courses. The systems will not only be used by students in engineering departments but by law, economics, medical, humanities, education, physical sciences, nursing and horticulture departments as well. This will be the first time students in such diverse disciplines will have access to parallel processing computers. The Cray Research systems will be connected to more than 200 computer terminals located throughout the university campus. Chiba University said it expects the high-performance computing environment to promote a new campus computing model for higher education. Through a competitive procurement process, Canon Supercomputing S.I. and Cray Research Japan Ltd. were chosen to provide the university with the high-performance computer equipment, according to Cray Research officials.
