LOUIS, Dec. 27, 1995 -- Cray Research, Inc. and Cowsert Corporation announced that they have signed an agreement to collaborate on solutions for the telecommunications industry. As part of the agreement, Cowsert will make its XPress Backup televaulting application available on the CRAY CS6400 enterprise server and the two companies will work together on new opportunities based on this powerful combined solution. The companies said they plan to target worldwide telecommunications companies wanting to provide televaulting services -- a novel way to remotely back-up personal computers and distributed systems -- as a new value-added service to their customers. According to Mike Dabbs, Cowsert's chief technical officer, "This solution has significant potential in the telecommunications industry because about 90% of all PCs are not backed up on a regular basis, leaving valuable data subject to such risks as hard drive failure, fire, natural disasters, and human error. In addition, most small and mid-sized companies that do perform PC back-ups do this on disks that are often not stored off-site and therefore still at serious risks. Our XPress Backup software automatically performs scheduled back ups over standard dial-up telephone connections, allowing telecommunications companies to easily offer this valuable new service to their customers." Dabbs noted that certain ISDN and T1 interface devices are also supported. The availability of Cowsert's XPress Backup on the CS6400 system is the first implementation of this application on an open systems server. According to Larry Cowsert, president of Cowsert Corp., "The CS6400 is the perfect platform for this innovative new application. First, it's a system that is scalable -- our customers and prospects can start small and then grow into an enterprise-wide capability. And second, the CS6400 server is the only system today that can readily support the huge, multiple terabyte (trillion bytes) data capacities that the telecommunications industry requires." "We are pleased that Cowsert came to Cray when they needed a high-performance computer system capable of handling this innovative application," said Bobbi Hazard, vice president of commercial sales for Cray Research. "We are aggressively targeting the telecommunications industry with our CS6400 business server. We look forward to the joint opportunities that will result from this powerful combined solution and to serving additional high-performance computing solution needs of the telecommunications industry." The CS6400 enterprise business server, the flagship product of Cray's Business Systems unit, began shipping in February 1994. In October 1995, Cray announced an enhanced model, featuring new SuperSPARC II microprocessors expected to be up to 50% faster on commercial applications. The CS6400 system is the most powerful and scalable parallel business server in the open systems market today, beginning at four and scaling to 64 processors, as well as supporting up to 10 terabytes of on-line disk. CS6400 customers include: MCI Telecommunications, Samsung Electronics, Co. Ltd., Bank of America, the UK's International Monetary Fund (IMF), Citibank, American Automobile Association (AAA), and one of England's leading insurers Churchills Insurance, which was sold through Cray reseller Amdahl Corp. Cray's Business Systems unit provides leading open system solutions and consulting services for data warehousing, decision support and on-line transaction processing as well as on-line analytical processing and multi-media applications. Cray Research designed, manufactures, markets, sells and supports the CS6400 enterprise database servers worldwide both directly and through distributors and resellers. Cray Research provides the leading high-performance computing tools and services to help solve customers' most challenging problems. ###
