This month, Cranfield installed an interim CRAY EL94 supercomputer which will be used until the CRAY J90 system arrives later this year. The Cray Research compact supercomputer will be used primarily by graduate students and researchers in the College of Aeronautics (COA) and the Department of Turbomachinery and Engineering Mechanics (DTE) to perform research for worldwide aerospace and automotive industries, including crash test research and engine combustion modeling. The DTE will use Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) applications on the Cray Research compact supercomputers to simulate primary air and water flow in turbomachines. "Cranfield engineers have been closely involved in various developments in this field," said Professor Robin Elder, head of DTE. "The availability of such computing power will improve the detail and accuracy of comparisons between simulations and actual physical tests of flow within turbomachines, something that was not possible with our current computational resources." "The Cray Research supercomputer is ideal for modern aircraft design in the COA because of its capability to bring together several pieces of complex information to accomplish a single task," said Professor Alan Morris, head of the COA. "Structural analysis must be combined with CFD to describe the full aeroelastic behavior of an aircraft, in other words, how the structure of an aircraft and its engine behave in turbulent conditions. These analyses all form part of the research activity of the COA, and access to Cray Research supercomputing capability is essential to support them." Introduced in September of last year, the CRAY J916 is a low- cost, compact supercomputer designed to operate as a powerful simulation server for problems that may overwhelm the capabilities of workstations. Cray reports that is has received more than 80 orders for the system, which will begin shipping next month. Cray Research provides the leading supercomputing tools and services to help solve customers' most challenging problems. ###
