The companies said that co-marketing efforts will begin immediately and that the complete migration solution will be available in third quarter of this year. The agreement, aimed at allowing Convex users to move their high-performance computing capability forward, calls for Wizard to develop unique software tools that automatically convert Convex users' programs and data for use on Cray systems. Cray said the Convex user community has demanding, growing requirements that are well suited for Cray systems, which are priced beginning well below $1 million. "Cray believes its products are the most logical upgrade path for Convex users who are looking for continuity from a vendor committed to high-performance technical computing solutions," said Karl Freund, vice president of corporate marketing at Cray. "These products and services represent an investment by Cray in the Convex community, offering an attractive path forward with maximum investment protection, minimum retraining, and high-performance, affordable computing technology combined with full service and support." Under the agreement, Wizard will develop unique software tools including an applications source compiler and a metadata converter. The applications software source compiler will automatically translate applications in the Convex FORTRAN dialect, including library references, directives and operating system dependencies, into the Cray F90 dialect, taking into account also the system architectural differences between the Cray and Convex systems. The applications will then be compiled by Cray's high-performance compilers to ensure optimum applications performance. Adrian Wise, CEO of Wizard said, "This unique product is designed to minimize the costs and risks for Convex users considering migration of their applications to Cray systems. Our unique technology has been demonstrated to be highly effective and provide excellent applications performance automatically." The metadata conversion product will automatically convert either Convex UniTree or Convex CSM file management control information into Cray Data Migration Facility (DMF) file management control information. Cray Research will simultaneously develop enhancements to DMF to allow direct reading of Convex UniTree and CSM data files so that these will not require translation. "Experience with several file-server upgrade projects suggests this approach offers the best way forward for users with large and critical sets of data to protect. The advantage of DMF is its unique scalability features, performance and total support as evidenced by a large and satisfied user community," said Wise. Cray said nearly 25 percent of its customer base uses Cray's DMF software for hierarchical storage management. Many of these customers are managing multiple terabytes of data. Cray Research provides the leading high-performance computing tools and services to help solve the customer's most challenging problems. # # #
