(NYSE:CYR) announced today a value-added reseller agreement for Amdahl's Open Enterprise Systems division to market Amdahl-branded versions of the Cray Superserver 6400 (CS6400) system, the world's most powerful SPARC/Solaris- compliant system. Under the terms of the non-exclusive agreement, effective immediately, Amdahl will market the CS6400 systems on a worldwide basis, except for Japan. The new Amdahl systems will be called the SPARCsummit (TM) 6400E series and will be available with up to 64 processors, 16 gigabytes (billion bytes) of main memory and 256 gigabytes of disk storage. Amdahl will provide customer service and support for the SPARCsummit systems, and Cray Research will provide Amdahl with initial training and backup support. "Amdahl has widened its focus to meet customer needs for high end open systems," said Joseph Zemke, Amdahl President and CEO. "We are partnering with third parties like Cray Research to offer our customers the most powerful business solutions on the market. This partnership with Cray Research increases the range of hardware and software we offer." Zemke said the SPARCsummit 6400E branded products will run the Solaris operating environment with significant Amdahl and Cray data-center extensions for systems management, file management, software distribution, tape management and process management. "Amdahl and Cray Research are working closely with Sun to make Solaris the most capable open systems environment available for enterprise-wide computing." Bobbi Hazard, Vice President of Cray Research's Business Systems division, said, "We're very pleased that Amdahl will be remarketing our superserver systems because of Amdahl's strong distribution channel, experience in the commercial mainframe sector, and long history of strong customer relationships and high-quality service." "The CS6400 systems are the first high end, scalable servers to combine the strong price/performance of SPARC products with the reliability, availability and serviceability (RAS) features data center managers expect," she said. The systems, which began shipping in February 1994, have set new performance and price/performance records on the TPC-B and other industry-standard and customer benchmarks. Hazard noted that prior to this agreement, leading United Kingdom insurer Churchill Insurance recently ordered two CS6400 systems through Amdahl Corporation for high end, mission- critical on-line transaction processing (OLTP) using Oracle. Zemke said these enterprise class, shared memory multiprocessor servers address the high end commercial UNIX market as well as technical UNIX users. The superserver systems will be of special interest to Fortune 1000 companies employing open systems client/server architectures requiring mainframe performance and robustness with workstation price/performance for applications such as OLTP, DSS and data warehousing. The superserver systems address the needs of a wide range of industries, including telecommunications, utilities, retail, financial services, manufacturing, health care, petrochemical and transportation. Amdahl Corporation is a major supplier of large scale mainframe computers, UNIX system software and servers, data storage subsystems, data communications products, application development software, and a variety of educational and consulting services.
