CRAY RESEARCH SPONSORS NATIONAL SCIENCE BOWL

EAGAN, Minn., April 19, 1993 -- Supercomputer-maker Cray
Research, Inc., is the main corporate sponsor of the U.S.
Department of Energy's (DOE) 1993 National Science Bowl, a
high school competition whose final rounds are being held
this week in Washington.

During the past few months, more than 5,000 students from
1,000 high schools competed in Regional Science Bowl
Tournaments at DOE facilities across the country.  On
Saturday, the 30 winning teams from the regionals began
locking horns in subjects ranging from astronomy to
biology, chemistry, computer science, earth science,
engineering, environmental remediation, mathematics and
physics.  Final awards will be presented today at a
Washington Convention Center luncheon where Cray
Research's chairman and CEO, John F. Carlson, is scheduled
to speak alongside Energy Secretary Hazel R. O'Leary.

In addition to the coveted National Science Bowl title,
prizes include U.S. and international science trips, computer
equipment and software, teacher scholarships and--for the
winning team--free access to the National Education
Supercomputer, a system donated by Cray Research last
year to the DOE's Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory,
Livermore, Calif., for the lab's national education outreach
program.

"Nothing is more vital to our country's future than
encouraging a new generation of innovators and scientific
pioneers," said O'Leary. "The National Science Bowl gives
students who excel in science a forum for demonstrating
their knowledge and gaining recognition."

The Cray Research Foundation provided $85,000 to
underwrite this year's program.  Cray Research also co-
sponsored last year's event. "Our commitment to the
National Science Bowl helps fulfill the foundation's
mission to support key national science and mathematics
education programs," said Carlson.

The National Science Bowl program is endorsed by the
National Education Association, the National Association of
Secondary School Principals, and the National Association
of Elementary School Principals.

The National Science Bowl is one of more than 800 DOE-
sponsored education programs.  Last year, more than one
million students, teachers and parents participated in these
programs.  In addition to sponsoring the National Science
Bowl, Cray Research supports the National Education
Supercomputer Program and the New Mexico Supercomputer
Challenge, a statewide educational outreach program
operated out of the DOE's Los Alamos National Laboratory.
