(NYSE:CYR) today announced an agreement with Datametrics Corp., Chatsworth, Calif., under which Datametrics' Rugged Digital Systems business unit will manufacture the industry's first ruggedized supercomputing system. The rugged system will be based on the CRAY EL94 deskside supercomputer system, the entry product into Cray Research's full family of supercomputing systems. Under the agreement, Datametrics will purchase CRAY EL94 central processing units (CPUs) and components from Cray Research to manufacture the ruggedized version that can withstand the rigors of extreme environments such as those found in shipboard, airborne, submarine and ground-mobile applications. The new product, the CRAY R/EL94 supercomputer system, is slated to be available through both the Cray Research and Datametrics sales organizations in the fourth quarter of this year. The CRAY R/EL94 system's rugged construction will make it an ideal solution for the unique high-power computer challenges presented by severe, hostile and mobile environments, including those related to the defense, chemical manufacturing and petroleum exploration industries. Housed in Datametrics' proven, all-aluminum chassis-within-a- chassis, the CRAY R/EL94 will feature two or four CPUs and 256 or 512 million bytes (megabytes) of memory. In its maximum configuration, the system has a peak performance of 532 million calculations per second (megaflops). It will provide up to two HIPPI channel pairs, a seven-slot VME 6U I/0 Subsystem with five slots available for user interfaces and up to 21 billion bytes (gigabytes) of disk capacity. The CRAY R/EL94 system will be compatible with other Cray Research supercomputer systems and with UNIX System V.4. It will operate the same feature-rich software as other industrial- strength Cray Research systems, including the UNICOS operating system, programming environments, compilers and networking capabilities. "Our agreement with Datametrics marks two important firsts for Cray Research," said Dan Hogberg, general manager of small systems at Cray Research. "It is the first time we've had an OEM agreement and it will result in the first ruggedized supercomputing system for the marketplace," he said. "This agreement enables us to approach new sets of customers with our leading-edge technology." "Teaming with Cray Research enables us to extend our offering of ruggedized commercial computer products," said Jim Foti, Datametrics' vice president, North American sales. "With this agreement, Datametrics will be the first company to offer a ruggedized supercomputer. We're excited at the prospect of making this available to our long-standing government customers, as well as to commercial interests requiring high- capacity computer systems under extreme circumstances," he said. Cray Research provides the leading supercomputing tools and services to help solve customers' most challenging problems. Datametrics Corp. is a 31-year-old producer of computer peripherals and communications products for industrial, commercial and governmental markets. The company is primarily engaged in the design, development, manufacture and sale of high-speed color printers, high-resolution non-impact printer/plotters, ruggedized computers and workstations and data entry keyboards.
