(DuPont), Wilmington, Del., has ordered a CRAY C94 supercomputer system, Cray Research (NYSE:CYR) announced today. The system is scheduled to be installed at the DuPont Experimental Station in Wilmington in the first quarter of 1994, replacing a four processor CRAY Y-MP system. Terms were not disclosed. DuPont will use the CRAY C94 supercomputer in four primary areas: computational chemistry, process (manufacturing) simulation, structural analysis, and environmental modeling. DuPont currently runs these applications on the CRAY Y-MP system to develop new products, design new chemical plants and model the environment impacts of DuPont's products. The CRAY C94 system, Cray Research's four-processor model in the new CRAY C90 series, is the fourth generation of Cray Research systems ordered by Dupont. "Dupont was one of the first commercial firms to use supercomputers, starting with the CRAY 1 system," said Dr. Robert Eades, Cray Research director of chemical industry marketing. "The CRAY Y-MP has been an important tool in DuPont's development of appropriate alternatives to CFCs (chlorofluorocarbons)," said Dr. Alexander MacLachlan, senior vice president, DuPont research and development. "The supercomputer was used to identify the problems with CFCs, to help develop potential alternatives using computational chemistry, and to develop manufacturing processes and measure the environmental impacts of alternative CFC products." "We view Cray systems as tools for solving real business problems," said Dr. David Dixon, a research leader in DuPont's central research and development division. "Doing simulations on the CRAY Y-MP has helped us to develop new, environmentally safer products, with significant cost avoidance." According to Dixon, the new CRAY C94 system will allow DuPont to work with larger, more complex molecular and atomic systems. "DuPont is an industry leader in applying supercomputing to many areas of its bottom line business," said Eades. "DuPont's development of alternatives to CFCs is just one example of the company's breakthrough environmental solutions. We are pleased to continue our relationship with DuPont by providing the new CRAY C94 system to support DuPont's work." Cray Research creates the most powerful, highest-quality computational tools for solving the world's most challenging industrial and scientific problems. ###
