(NYSE:CYR) announced today that it received an order for multiple Cray supercomputers from Electronic Data Systems (EDS), a subsidiary of General Motors (NYSE:GM). The second-quarter order includes two of Cray's newest and most powerful supercomputing systems, both due to install in 1996 at EDS' Auburn Hills, Mich., Information Processing Center near Detroit. Terms were not disclosed. The supercomputers will be used to support General Motor's simulation needs for engineering and new product development as well as manufacturing for improved quality, safety, fuel efficiency and time-to-market for new vehicles. The contract included a CRAY T932 supercomputer, the largest model in the high-end CRAY T90 series announced in March. This system has a peak speed of more than 60 billion calculations per second. EDS also ordered a next-generation air-cooled Cray Massively Parallel Processing (MPP) system.
