The CRAY T3D system will be coupled with three CRAY Y-MP supercomputers on site and several CRAY EL compact supercomputer systems on site and at remote locations. Financial terms were not disclosed. The new Farnborough Supercomputing Centre is a government- industry initiative led by the Defence Research Agency (DRA), British Aerospace plc, GEC-Marconi Ltd. and Cray Research. The public-private center was established to provide United Kingdom industry, government agencies and academia with access to high-level computational resources. The center also is expected to promote collaboration on scientific and industrial research and development aided by high-performance computational tools. The CRAY T3D installed at Farnborough features 256 processors and 16 gigabytes of memory. The systems facilities are managed by Computer Sciences Corporation (CSC), a company with considerable experience in the operation of computer centers and networks, Cray officials said. At the FSC, the Cray Research supercomputers will be used for research and development in areas such as computational electromagnetics, fluid dynamics, structural analysis, detonics and computational chemistry and visualization. Any computing capacity not used by consortium members will be sold to other customers. At a dedication ceremony earlier this week, Ian Taylor, Parliamentary Under Secretary of State for Trade and Technology, said, "The Farnborough Supercomputing Centre is the largest conglomeration of computing power in Europe and is a benefit to British innovation in an area that has a key role to play in the increasing competitiveness of British Industry." David Lockley, General Manager of the Farnborough Supercomputing Centre, added, "The benefits of having access to computational resources provided by the CRAY T3D and other Cray Research systems at Farnborough are quite straightforward. New products can be brought to market earlier and at a lower cost, and the results are often better than by using traditional research and development methods. By shortening the time required to bring new products to market, industries across the United Kingdom will gain advantages in the international marketplace." "We are delighted to be a partner in the Farnborough Supercomputing Centre -- and in the role it will play in enhancing the competitiveness of United Kingdom industrial and government concerns," said Robert H. Ewald, president and chief operating officer of Cray Research. "We are also gratified that the consortium selected the CRAY T3D as the center's primary computing resource." Introduced a year ago, the CRAY T3D is the leading MPP system in the scientific and technical market, Cray said. Cray Research provides the leading supercomputing tools and services to help solve customers' most challenging problems. ###
