(NYSE: CYR) has been selected to provide its latest CRAY C90 technology supercomputing system to the Tokyo Institute of Technology, it was announced today. Cray said the award was its first successful public procurement against direct Japanese competition since establishing its offices in Japan in 1979. The company also said the award was its first from the Japanese University Computing Center. Terms were not disclosed. In announcing the award, Cray Research chairman and chief executive John Carlson said, "We are extremely pleased to have earned the opportunity to provide a system to the Tokyo Institute of Technology. While it is always gratifying to win a competition, we are doubly pleased because, for the first time, a large Cray system will be available to thousands of students, faculty, and scientists from other locations who use the Institute's centralized computing center." The new system will be installed in December, 1994. Cray Research is the leading supercomputing system supplier around the world. In Japan, Cray is the number two overall vendor in the private sector, where it has installed 31 baseline (large) systems. In the Japanese public-funded sector, Cray had previously installed eight baseline systems since 1979, none in direct competition with a Japanese vendor. The company has also sold 44 departmental or entry-level systems and nine Superserver systems to date in Japan.
