Carlson, president and chief operating officer at Cray Research, Inc. (NYSE: CYR) has been elected chairman and chief executive officer effective immediately, it was announced today. Carlson was elected to the top post by the company's Board of Directors at their regularly scheduled meeting here today. He succeeds John A. Rollwagen who resigned to accept a senior position with the Clinton Administration. Carlson, 54, has been associated with Cray Research since 1976. Since then, he has held the positions of treasurer, vice president of finance, executive vice president and chief financial officer, and was named president and chief operating officer in 1991. Rollwagen, 52, resigned as chairman, chief executive officer and board member in order to accept the nomination as Deputy Secretary of Commerce, second-in-command to U.S. Commerce Department Secretary Ron Brown. The company said that with Carlson's appointment, the following additional promotions were also made: -- Lester T. Davis, 62, formerly executive vice president and general manager of Cray's supercomputer operations was named chief operating officer, reporting to Carlson, and; -- Robert H. Ewald, 45, executive vice president, will assume the responsibilities of general manager, supercomputer operations, reporting to Davis. Davis has been with Cray Research since its inception and Ewald joined the company in 1984. The new appointments are all effective immediately. In commenting on the announcement Carlson said, "I am personally sorry to see my friend and partner, John Rollwagen, leave the company. His leadership has been instrumental in our growth and success throughout the last 17 years. At the same time, I am enthusiastic and excited by the fact that the Clinton Administration is attracting proven domestic and international business leaders like John to their team." Carlson graduated from Saint Mary's College, Winona, Minnesota in 1960 with a bachelor of science degree in business administration. He was awarded his Certified Public Accountant certificate in 1967 and is a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants. He is a member of the board of directors of TSI Incorporated and serves on the boards of Junior Achievement of the Upper Midwest, Inc.; Minnesota Private College Council and Minnesota Center for Corporate Responsibility. Carlson was born November 23, 1938 in Eau Claire, Wisconsin and graduated from Regis High School there. He and his wife, Pat are the parents of four children and reside in St. Paul.
