Davis, one of the very first employees of Cray Research, Inc. (NYSE: CYR) and its current chief operating officer, will retire from the company and its board of directors effective December 31, 1994 it was announced today by John Carlson, Cray chairman and chief executive. In announcing Davis' retirement, Carlson said, "Les Davis has personally had more to do with the overall successes achieved by Cray Research in the past 22 years than any single person, without exception." "Les is probably best recognized around the world as a computer design and engineering expert, but those of us who have known him well recognize that he is surely one of our best salespeople, as well," Carlson added. Davis, who will be 64 later this month, was one of the company's first employees. He joined Cray Research in 1972 as chief engineer for the CRAY-1 and was named vice president in 1973. He became executive vice president responsible for Chippewa Falls operations and was elected to the company's board of directors in 1990. He has also served as executive vice president and chief technology officer. Though widely admired and recognized throughout the supercomputing industry, Davis has shied from personal publicity to focus his attention on the design and manufacture of Cray's supercomputer systems. He oversaw the design and manufacturing of every generation of Cray Research computers since 1972. "Cray Research has earned and has maintained a dominant position in the supercomputing industry for two decades in large part because of Les' focus and determination," Carlson said. A native of Minneapolis, Davis holds a bachelor of science degree from the University of Minnesota. Prior to joining Cray Research, he was employed by Control Data Corporation and from 1955 to 1959 he worked for Engineering Research Associates as a technician and engineer.
