These systems were installed in second quarter, Cray said. Terms were not disclosed. Macklanburg-Duncan installed the CS6400 database servers for production computing, software development and disaster recovery to support the consolidation of its Oracle databases. The consolidation is designed to improve data access for company employees, according to Michael Mack, manager of IT technical services at the company. He said the new systems will replace Sequent and Honeywell Bull equipment and will house and manage the company's financial, manufacturing, order processing and manufacturing equipment maintenance databases. In addition to database consolidation, the CS6400 systems will support Macklanburg- Duncan's plans to advance its automated ("paperless") order processing, as well as the effectiveness of its manufacturing database. "The selection of the CS6400 systems is part of our overall effort to improve our enterprise-wide client/server model so that all employees that need corporate data -- from the CEO to the manufacturing floor manager -- can quickly and easily get the information they need," said Mack. "So far we have successfully migrated our order processing system to the new server; the migration was smooth, the only transition factor that was noticed by our users was that response times were substantially faster because of the more powerful computer system." Mack said that response times for users are now as fast as 2-3 seconds for general queries. "We are pleased to win this important business from a leading product manufacturer such as Macklanburg-Duncan," said Bobbi Hazard, vice president and general manager of Cray's Business Systems Division. "Macklanburg-Duncan is deploying state-of- the-art IT technology to benefit its business and its customers. Cray Research is proud to be part of this effort." Hazard said the CS6400 has also been selected for mission- critical applications by customers including Bank of America, the American Automobile Association (AAA), Citibank, and to run the United Kingdom's census database and International Monetary Fund (IMF) financial statistics. The CS6400 system begins at under $400,000 (U.S. list price), can be configured with up to 64 SuperSPARC processors, up to 16 gigabytes of shared memory, 64 I/O (input/output) channels and more than 10 terabytes of online disk storage. The systems provide industry-leading bandwidth of 1.76 gigabytes per second. "Our CS6400 enterprise database server is the only commercial parallel processing system on the market today that is efficiently scaling production applications for OLTP and decision support systems (DSS)," Hazard said. Cray's Business Systems Division (BSD) provides leading open systems solutions and consulting services for data warehousing, decision support, and on-line transaction processing, as well as on-line analytical processing and multimedia applications. BSD manufactures, markets, sells and supports the CS6400 enterprise database server on a global basis, directly and through distributors and resellers.
