(MSI) announced today at the 206th national meeting of the American Chemical Society here in Chicago that they have signed a joint agreement under which MSI will distribute Cray Research's UniChem program for computational quantum chemistry. Under the terms of the agreement, MSI and Cray Research will both provide worldwide distribution of the UniChem product line. MSI will focus on the workstation market; Cray Research will target the supercomputer market. Each company will also provide first-line support to its UniChem customers. The UniChem group at Cray Research will continue to develop the product. "MSI offers us a natural extension of our own distribution capabilities," said Carl Diem, Cray Research executive vice president, sales and marketing. "The long-standing availability of MSI's modeling programs, such as QUANTA and CHARMm on Cray Research platforms, coupled with MSI's worldwide sales force and presence in the molecular modeling industry, makes our new relationship a natural." Michael J. Savage, Molecular Simulations' president and CEO, added that "UniChem brings important new functionality to MSI's product line. We have been searching for the right partner in quantum mechanics, and the reputation that Cray Research has made for UniChem should position us well in this burgeoning field. In addition, UniChem's interfaces to a wide array of modeling programs should create a strong demand for our products." Quantum chemistry is a method which can be used to accurately determine the structure and properties of atoms and molecules from theory alone. Computationally-intensive by nature, quantum chemistry calculations are usually run on supercomputers and powerful workstations. Sophisticated workstations are also used as interfaces to the supercomputers, and for visualizing molecular structures and properties which can be displayed using 3-D color graphics. Cray Research creates the most powerful, highest-quality computational tools for solving the world's most challenging scientific and industrial problems. Founded in 1984, Molecular Simulations Inc. is a privately-held company with yearly revenues in excess of $20 million. MSI's products enable scientists to predict the behavior and properties of organic and inorganic materials through molecular modeling, a technique that simulates and visualizes materials at an atomistic level. Companies and academicians around the world have found that simulation technology can help increase the efficiency and productivity of research, development, and manufacturing processes in industries as diverse as biotechnology, pharmaceuticals, agriculture/food processing, and materials sciences. The company has the world's largest installed base of licensed applications and the industry's broadest line of modeling and visualization software. MSI develops products for many major workstations and scientific computing platforms. Headquartered in Burlington, MA, the company has 130 employees worldwide. # # # Editors Note: UniChem is a registered trademark of Cray Research, Inc.
