Cray/Media: Mardi Larson, 612/683-3538 Cray/Financial: Brad Allen, 612/683-7395 NAVAL UNDERSEA WARFARE CENTER ORDERS CRAY T3D SYSTEM EAGAN, Minn., Dec. 19, 1995 -- The U.S. Naval Undersea Warfare Center, Newport, RI., has ordered and will install later this quarter a 64-processor CRAY T3D supercomputer, Cray Research (NYSE:CYR) announced today. The CRAY T3D is Cray's current-generation scalable parallel processing system; it possesses a heterogeneous computing environment coupling Cray parallel vector processors and microprocessors (DEC Alpha). This heterogeneity was a key system feature in the Naval Undersea Warefare Center's selection. The center plans to run applications including data fusion, sensor optimization and environmental modeling relating to submarine and surface ship sonar and information management, as well as torpedo and acoustic technology and launcher and missile systems. According to Naval officials, the new supercomputer will help the organization be more effective in global surveillance and communication, precision strikes, sea control and undersea superiority, and technology for training and readiness.
