A CRAY Y-MP system was installed at the University's Prentice Centre in third quarter of this year. The university has built up a body of expert academic and support staff able to work on scientific, industrial and commercial applications in supercomputing. The supercomputer will be used by these in- house experts, as well as be made available to other universities and research centers in Australia. In a separate news release issued by the university, Professor Brian Wilson, The University of Queensland vice chancellor, said the agreement placed the university in a strong position to meet challenging research problems of the future. He said the CRAY Y-MP system would provide supercomputer support to establish university research programs and a number of national research centers on campus. It would also support both undergraduate and post-graduation teaching. Wilson emphasized the need for collaborative arrangements with government and industry in Australia to ensure supercomputer facilities and expertise were used for the maximum benefit. The University of Queensland has established a Vice Chancellor's Committee on High Performance Computing, with an aim of formulating a strategic plan for high performance computing in Australia. Cray Research creates the most powerful, highest-quality computational tools for solving the world's most challenging scientific and industrial problems. ###
