(NYSE:CYR) announced today that Raytheon Aircraft Company has ordered a CRAY J916 supercomputer to replace the CRAY EL90 series compact supercomputer system it installed earlier this year. Raytheon Aircraft, located in Wichita, Kan., is the first in the light aircraft industry to order a CRAY J916 supercomputer system and was the first in this industry to install a Cray system. The CRAY J916 system, announced in September and slated for first shipments in early 1995, is the new generation low-cost, compact supercomputer system from Cray Research. Raytheon Aircraft Company designs and manufacturers commercial aircraft, including small commuter aircraft and business jets. Raytheon Aircraft engineers will use the CRAY J916 system as they do their current Cray system to run in- depth aerodynamic analyses of new and existing aircraft designs. The increased processing power of the CRAY J916 supercomputer will improve the capabilities of TRANAIR, a NASA-developed computational fluid dynamics (CFD) program used extensively by Raytheon Aircraft engineers to simulate and analyze high velocity wind flow patterns around aircraft and aircraft components during flight. "With the new Cray supercomputer, we can do more CFD analysis early in the design cycle which ultimately makes our wind tunnel testing more effective," said Dr. Neal Pfeiffer, senior technical specialist, Raytheon Aircraft. The CRAY J916 system also will enable Raytheon Aircraft Company to grow into other areas of aviation and manufacturing simulation. "The CRAY J916 will allow us to simulate additional design areas and new tooling and fabrication processes. This will result in an aircraft that has more value for our customers, and is less expensive for us to produce," according to David Bernsdorf, Manager, Special Projects at Raytheon Aircraft. The new CRAY J916 supercomputers are scalable, UNIX-based servers with four to 16 processors. The CRAY J916 supercomputer is the third generation of Cray Research systems priced beginning well under $1 million. The company has recorded more than 250 orders for these low-cost systems since entering the market in late 1991. Cray Research provides the leading supercomputing tools and services to help solve customers' most challenging problems. ###
