During the past few months, more than 6,000 students from 1,200 high schools competed in regional science bowl tournaments at DOE facilities across the country. On Saturday, the 52 winning teams from the regionals began locking horns in subjects ranging from astronomy to biology, chemistry, computer science, earth science, mathematics and physics. Final awards will be presented today at a Washington Convention Center luncheon where Cray Research's Chairman and CEO, John Carlson, will speak, along with Energy Secretary Hazel R. O'Leary. In addition to the National Science Bowl title, prizes will include U.S. and international science education trips, computer equipment and software, scholarships, and--for the winning team--free access to the National Education Supercomputer, a system donated by Cray Research to the DOE's Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, Livermore, Calif., for the lab's national education outreach program. The Cray Research Foundation provided $85,000 to underwrite this year's program. Cray Research also co-sponsored last year's event. "Our commitment to the National Science Bowl helps fulfill the foundation's mission to support key national science and mathematics education programs," said Carlson. The National Science Bowl is one of more than 800 DOE- sponsored education activities. Last year, more than one million students, teachers, and parents participated in these programs. Cray Research provides the leading supercomputing tools and services to help solve customers' most challenging problems. ###
