Cray/Media: Mardi Larson, 612/683-3538 NATIONAL UNIVERSITY OF SINGAPORE GETS THIRD CRAY SUPERCOMPUTER SINGAPORE, Sept. 28, 1995 -- Cray Research, Inc. announced today that the National University of Singapore will officially receive its third Cray supercomputer this Saturday at the university's 90th anniversary celebrations held here. Cray and university officials plan to dedicate a CRAY EL98 system to the university's Center for Computational Mechanics (CCM) at the event. Terms of the acquisition were not disclosed. Earlier this month, Cray announced that the National Supercomputing Research Centre, affiliated with the university, had ordered and will install a CRAY T94 supercomputer later this year. And in June of this year, the National University of Singapore installed a CRAY J916 supercomputer at its Computer Centre to be used as a university- wide simulation server for scientific and engineering applications. With the installation of the CRAY T94 system later this year, NSRC will be the forerunner of supercomputing in South East Asia. "We are dedicated to driving the use of supercomputers in industrial applications," said Associate Professor Lam Khin Yong, director of the Centre for Computational Mechanics. "We see our recent acquisitions of industry-leading Cray supercomputers -- specifically the CRAY EL98 dedicated to the CCM -- as a key step in our industrial programs. This will enable our Centre to show to industry and educate companies on the true value of simulation -- improving time-to-market, quality and safety for a wide variety of products." The CRAY EL98 system will be dedicated to the field of computational mechanics and be used for simulations of fluid dynamics, fluid flows, finite element analysis, and advanced material technology, which are supercomputer applications used extensively in the automotive, aerospace, chemical, and electronics industries among others. Cray has played a significant role in moving these applications onto supercomputers for industry and has sold hundreds of Cray systems for these uses. "We are honored and pleased to participate in the 90th anniversary celebration and to dedicate the CRAY EL98 system to the Centre's important role to increase industry's use of high-performance computing throughout Singapore and South East Asia," said Raj Godhia, Cray's regional manager for South East Asia. "We very much look forward to other universities, polytechnics, institutes, and industry in the region following Singapore's leadership." Cray Research provides the leading high-performance computing tools and services to help solve customers' most challenging problems. ###
