A CRAY J916 compact, air-cooled supercomputer is scheduled to be installed at the university in mid-1995. The CRAY J916 system will be used by graduate and undergraduate students and researchers to learn new supercomputing simulation technologies and to conduct research in collaboration with industry. "Our staff can consider themselves very fortunate to have a Cray Research supercomputer of their own on campus," says Professor Lim Pin, Vice Chancellor of the National University of Singapore. "I'm confident the acquisition of the CRAY J916 supercomputer and its wide range of application software will open up new research and development opportunities, encourage new users to come on board, and lift our research capability to new heights." In a recent ceremony marking the order, Cray Senior Vice President Carl Diem saluted Singapore University's leaders for their "relentless pursuit of educational and technical excellence." Diem said Cray Research has received more than 80 advance orders for the CRAY J916 system, which is scheduled to begin shipping in first quarter of 1995.
