LTD IS CRAY RESEARCH'S FIRST CUSTOMER IN JAPANESE PHARMACEUTICAL INDUSTRY EAGAN, Minn., April 13, 1994 -- Cray Research, Inc. (NYSE:CYR) today announced the company's first order from a Japanese pharmaceutical firm. Taisho Pharmaceutical Co., Ltd. has installed a CRAY EL92 departmental supercomputer system at Taisho's general research laboratory in Omiya City, Saitama Prefecture. Terms were not disclosed. Taisho will use the CRAY EL92 system as a high-speed server linked to database servers and graphic workstations to run proprietary and leading third-party applications software, including Gaussian, AMBER, MOPAC and Cray Research's integrated UniChem software for molecular design. Taisho conducts comprehensive studies on the interaction between bio- molecules and will use the CRAY EL92 system in the development of new drugs. Although Cray Research supercomputers are used within Japan's chemical industry, this pharmaceutical-industry order is a first in Japan. Cray Research supercomputer systems can substantially accelerate the design of drugs and other substances, the company said. The two-processor, air-cooled deskside supercomputer system ordered from Cray Research Japan features a peak system performance of 267 megaflops (million calculations per second), 512 megabytes (million bytes) of main memory, and measures just 2 feet (w) x 2.2 feet (d) x 4.6 feet (h). Taisho chose the CRAY EL92 system for its high-capacity UNICOS (UNIX) operating system and wide range of available applications software programs.
