The system is the first Cray Research supercomputer installed in Thailand and will have four central processing units and 512 megabytes of main memory (soon to be expanded to one gigabyte). "We're very pleased to be the first institution in Thailand with access to the speed and processing power of a Cray Research supercomputer," said Dr. Palrash Thajchayapong, NECTEC Director. "Support from Cray Research and Thai Equipment & Telecom has been instrumental in launching NECTEC's High Performance Computing Center. The Cray Research system will support more accurate and faster mathematical modeling for various projects in science, engineering and social science. We expect to promote still other uses in the near future." The Cray Research system will be used by NECTEC for computational chemistry, computational physics, mathematical modeling and computer science. NECTEC plans to provide access to the system via Thaisarn, a local academic computer network that connects a number of universities in the country and that provides a gateway to the Internet. NECTEC provides support for research, development and engineering in universities, government and the private sector; provides technical services to the private sector in production development; invests in the development and acquisition of technology; and disseminates information regarding electronic and computer technologies and related issues. NECTEC has funded some 320 research and development projects since 1988 and has been a key force in pushing forward technology development in Thailand. The organization was founded in September 1986 as a project under the Thai Ministry of Science, Technology and Industry and now operates under the auspices of the country's National Science and Technology Development Agency, a publicly funded, semi- autonomous agency. In conjunction with the installation of the CRAY EL 90 Series system, Cray Research will conduct workshops for NECTEC staff on computational chemistry applications using the UNICHEM software package developed by Cray Research in collaboration with researchers from major worldwide chemical companies, as well as on finite element applications. Finite element methods are widely used by researchers, scientists and engineers for supercomputer-based simulations in such areas as automobile crashworthiness testing, aircraft and ship design, and civil and chemical engineering. UNICHEM is used principally by chemists for molecular modeling to investigate and develop new pharmaceuticals and materials. "The delivery of this system to NECTEC extends the reach of Cray Research's customer base to another new country," said John F. Carlson. "Our air-cooled, compact supercomputers have been instrumental in opening new geographic markets for us and the installation of this system at NECTEC continues that trend." Cray Research provides the leading supercomputing tools and services to help solve customers' most challenging problems. ###
