Media: Steve Conway, 612/683-7133 Financial: Brad Allen, 612/683-7395 CRAY RESEARCH IS HIGH-END LEADER ON ANNUAL LIST OF WORLD'S MOST POWERFUL SUPERCOMPUTER SITES EAGAN, Minn., August 31, 1995 -- Cray Research reported today that it again emerged as the high-end supercomputer industry leader on the annual independent listing of the "TOP500 Supercomputer Sites". Of the 100 most powerful supercomputer sites on the worldwide list, 46 were Cray Research systems, compared with the next-best figure of 11 each for Thinking Machines and Fujitsu. In addition, Cray had the largest total number of supercomputer systems installed at customer sites on the list. There were 116 Cray supercomputers installed at customer sites on the "TOP500" list, compared with the next-best figure of 96 customer-installed systems for Silicon Graphics, Cray officials said. The most powerful Silicon Graphics system on the list ranked number 193 on the list, however. The list is compiled and published annually by Jack J. Dongarra, University of Tennessee, and Hans W. Meuer and Erich Strohmaier, both of the University of Mannheim, Germany. According to The Smaby Group industry analyst firm, Cray Research held a 70 percent share of the global high-end supercomputer market at the end of 1994.
