GatorMail-Q ATM Support Announcement Media: Mardi Larson, 612/683-3538 CRAY RESEARCH EMBRACES ATM TECHNOLOGY PORTLAND, Ore., Nov. 16, 1993 -- Cray Research, Inc. announced today that it is developing Asynchronous Transmission Mode (ATM) support for its supercomputing systems and will conduct several field trials of the new technology with selected customers during the first half of 1994. ATM is the newest transmission technology and allows voice, data and video transmission across a single physical connection, according to Wayne Roiger, head of the networking group at Cray Research. "In addition to supporting multi-media communications, ATM technology has many other benefits," he said. "ATM will allow faster switching than available with today's high-end transmission technology and the speed is scalable to upwards of one gigabyte per second. There have also been strong indications that the telecommunications and computer industries are both pointed in the direction of supporting this standard, which could result in wider use of the technology and drive costs down for our supercomputer users." "Soon we expect to be able to access supercomputer systems at supercomputer-caliber speeds from anywhere," Roiger said. Currently, Cray Research is developing ATM support for field trials with customers. The company is writing software to support the industry-leading Fore Systems ATM interfaces and the Q-93B signalling software, a CCITT standard for the signalling protocol. "We are very excited about ATM and anticipate significant benefits for our customers. We are committed to the technology and to supporting it," Roiger said. "We plan to announce products pending the outcome of the field trials."
