CRAY RESEARCH LAUNCHES CRAYSOFT INITIATIVE TO
MARKET SOFTWARE FOR PERSONAL COMPUTERS,
WORKSTATIONS, SERVERS

Pioneering First Product, NQE, Balances Workloads
Across Whole Networks

EAGAN, Minn., Oct. 20, 1993 -- Cray Research, Inc. (NYSE:CYR)
today launched a new business initiative, CraySoft, to oversee
development and marketing of the company's software for
other firms' systems -- including personal computers (PCs),
Macintoshes, workstations and servers.

The company also announced CraySoft's first product, Network
Queuing Environment (NQE), a pioneering software tool that
allows workloads to be balanced across a variety of computer
systems.  Additional Cray Research software technologies,
such as the company's Fortran 90 Programming Environment,
will also be marketed by CraySoft to create a compatible
development and production environment across a variety of
architectures, according to CraySoft manager Leary Gates.

"Cray Research is widely recognized as an industry leader in
high-performance software products and technologies," said
Irene Qualters, Cray Research vice president of software.  "The
CraySoft initiative reflects Cray Research's vision for open
supercomputing -- a cohesive environment, unified by
standards-based software, that extends from the
microcomputer to the supercomputer, including PCs,
workstations, clusters, MPP systems and traditional
supercomputers.  Our CraySoft product offerings will reinforce
this vision by providing high performance for the entire
environment."

"CraySoft products will include compilers, tools, libraries,
networking and applications software for systems across a
full range of performance. "Now customers can benefit from
Cray software, whether or not they have Cray hardware," Gates
said.  "CraySoft products are available through third-party
distributors and the company's new high-performance hotline,
1-800-BUY-CRAY, effective October 25."


"Our first product, CraySoft NQE, is a distributed processing
product that assigns jobs to the best available resource on the
network -- whether that is a single workstation, a
workstation cluster, a server or a Cray Research
supercomputer system.  This product allows users to share
network resources more effectively," said Gates.  

He said CraySoft NQE is actually a suite of products with two
main components: the NQE Server and the NQE Client.  The NQE
Server includes an enhanced, compatible version of public
domain Network Queuing System (NQS) software, a Network
Load Balancer and a File Transfer Agent for UNIX workstations. 
The Network Queuing Client is a simplified queuing
environment which allows users to submit jobs to the NQE
server directly from workstations or personal computers.

CraySoft NQE is scheduled to be available by year-end 1993 for
SPARC-based systems running Solaris 2.2, including Sun
workstations, servers and high-performance server systems
from the company's Beaverton, Ore.-based subsidiary, Cray
Research Superservers.  Support for IBM RS6000, SGI IRIS,
Hewlett Packard and DEC Alpha workstations is slated for
availability in the first half of 1994.  Pricing will begin at
under $3,000 for a 10-user server license and an unlimited
number of clients on compatible systems.
