CraySoft will market, sell and distribute Legent Corporation's OSM product to the high-end science, engineering and industrial marketplace, the two companies said. OSM, a family of open hierarchical storage management (HSM) solutions for UNIX systems, provides automated storage management across networks of SPARC-based clients and servers. Hierarchical storage management improves the efficiency of managing data storage by providing a transparent, scalable method of storing and retrieving large amounts of data and infrequently used files on less costly storage devices. It also reduces the amount of user or administrator time required for managing disk space on a workstation or server. "Legent is fortunate to have a distribution partner of CraySoft's caliber," said Otto Offereins, General Manager for Legent's Distributed System Management Division. "Our focus is on the commercial IS/IT customer that defines the vast majority of our installed base," he continued. "With CraySoft's help, we seek to leverage our storage management products with additional sales into the technical computing community." CraySoft OSM product consists of the OSM Client and OSM Server, according to Leary Gates, CraySoft Program Manager. The OSM Client is a file migration product for UNIX environments that extends the capacity of disk-based file systems by routing selected files to alternate storage subsystems, he said. The OSM Server consists of a distributable network storage repository that stores migrated files, performs subsequent migration activities among available devices, and provides volume and device management functions. "OSM is a leading-edge storage management solution appropriate for the SPARC-based CRAY SUPERSERVER 6400 platform and other large SPARC servers," Gates said. "Users of these systems will find OSM to be an efficient and cost- effective solution for avoiding and managing potential out-of- disk-space conditions that frequently occur on systems with large storage needs." He noted that the OSM product is an ideal complement to Cray Research's own HSM solution, called Data Migration Facility (DMF) software, which is available only on the company's supercomputing systems that run UNICOS (Cray's UNIX implementation). OSM software provides the same unparalleled scalability on SPARC that DMF provides for Cray Research's multiprocessing supercomputers. Like OSM software, the DMF product automatically and transparently manages the storage and retrieval of inactive or infrequently used files from disk storage to tape storage. "Our DMF software users are demanding similar tools for open environments. CraySoft OSM is our answer to customer requests for world-class data management on open environments," said Gates. CraySoft OSM is available for early access release on all Solaris SPARC platforms, including the CRAY SUPERSERVER 6400. General availability is expected in early 1995. Legent Corporation (NASDAQ: LGNT), headquartered in Herndon, VA, is a leading supplier of software and services for the management of distributed computing across the enterprise. Legent's open systems strategy XPE (TM) (Cross Platform Environment) is the company's approach for distributed enterprise computing. This approach encompasses interoperable host server and desktop computing environments. Since 1989, Legent has provided software to maximize information technology and today has 75,000 products in use at 12,000 customer sites. CraySoft is the Cray Research software business unit responsible for development, marketing, and sales of Cray Research software for non-Cray platforms in the open systems marketplace.
