The CF90 compiler, recognized as the first full, native implementation of the Fortran 90 standard, was made available for Cray Research supercomputers in fourth quarter of 1993. The SPARC/Solaris version of the company's Fortran 90 Programming Environment will be available through CraySoft, Cray Research's initiative aimed at marketing and distributing high-performance Cray-engineered software on non-Cray platforms. The company said that CraySoft will also make the Fortran 90 product available on additional platforms in the future. "Our goal is for the CF90 Programming Environment to become an industry standard," said Irene Qualters, Cray Research senior vice president, software. "In broadening the platforms for CF90, we make the same high-performance programming and compiling environment developed for the supercomputer world available on PCs, workstations and servers." She noted that the environment for CF90 on Cray Research systems is the same as on the workstation and includes industry-leading automatic parallelization and advanced scalar optimization; expert systems for improved code performance; and sophisticated debuggers and browsers to edit Fortran 90 source code, as well as trace code changes. Qualters said that Cray Research has an agreement with Absoft Corporation for that company to develop, market and distribute versions of the CF90 compiler for high-performance desktop computers like PCs based on Intel486 and Pentium processors, as well as the new PowerPC-based Macintoshes. According to Absoft officials, the compiler will be available on PowerPC Macintoshes by the end of this year; support for other platforms will follow. In addition, Cray has an agreement with Visual Numerics, Inc. for it to market and distribute the CraySoft Fortran 90 Programming Environment for SPARC and to develop the industry leading IMSL Fortran 90 MP libraries to interoperate with the CraySoft Fortran 90 product. Visual Numerics also announced this week at SunWorld 94 that its Fortran 90 version of the numerical library supporting the CraySoft Fortran 90 product will be available August. "Combined with CraySoft efforts, these important joint activities with Absoft and Visual Numerics will assist in standardizing the CF90 Programming Environment as well," Qualters said. The CraySoft Fortran 90 Programming Environment is priced according to the number of users. Domestic pricing starts at $1,295 for a single user network license. Through the end of September, Craysoft is offering U.S. customers a promotional price of $995 for a single user network license. CraySoft products are available through VARs and distributors like Visual Numerics, Cray Research sales offices worldwide and Cray Research's new high-performance hotline, 1-800- BUY-CRAY, as well as e-mail at craysoft@cray.com. Fortran 90 is the next generation of Fortran, the most widely used programming language for scientific and technical computing. Cray Research provides the leading supercomputing tools and services to help solve customers' most challenging problems. ###
