CRAY RESEARCH AND ILLUSTRA PROVIDE HIGH PERFORMANCE OBJECT-RELATIONAL' DATABASE SOLUTION NEW YORK, June 22, 1994 -- Cray Research Superservers, a subsidiary of Cray Research, Inc. (NYSE: CYR), and Illustra Information Technologies, Inc.(TM), formerly Montage Software, have announced an agreement that combines the CRAY SUPERSERVER 6400 (CS6400) system with the Illustra Server (TM). Under terms of the agreement, Illustra now offers and supports Illustra Server on the CS6400 family of systems. The two companies will also participate in joint sales and marketing efforts. The announcement was made at the Securities Industry Association show held here this week. Illustra Server extends the widely-accepted relational database model with breakthrough technology that supports audio, video and images as data types and provides intelligent storage of time-series and temporal data. The Illustra Server can support 16 million tables, each with over one trillion rows, and features search techniques that speed the time required to analyze and manage information contained in very large databases. For example, Illustra Server's TimeSeries DataBlade module, which was designed in partnership with leading Wall Street firms, enables financial services users to analyze and manage corporate financial reporting, stock prices, bond yields, derivative securities and remotely sensed data. Users may define unique queries to analyze and price financial securities and investment portfolios based on varying market factors. "Illustra is the next step in the evolution of database management systems and its unique capabilities make it ideal for financial services applications, which require complex data modeling. With Illustra running on the CS6400 systems, our financial services customers have the speed and power to analyze market conditions to price securities and derivatives or map historical data," said Jeff Pancottine, director of marketing for Cray Research Superservers. "We are pleased to offer the Illustra Server on the CRAY SUPERSERVER 6400," said Bruce Golden, Illustra vice president of marketing. "Together, the hardware and software products offer optimized performance for fast analysis of very large and complex data." The CS6400 is the world's fastest and most expandable SPARC/Solaris-compliant system. These systems are available in configurations from 4 to 64 processors, with up to 16 gigabytes (16 billion bytes) of memory, more than two terabytes (2 trillion bytes) of online storage and up to 64 I/O channels. Illustra Information Technologies, based in Oakland, California, is the leading supplier of object-relational database management systems and tools for business, scientific and technical solutions. The company was founded in 1992. Cray Research provides the leading supercomputing tools and service to help solve customers' most challenging problems.
