(NYSE: CYR), today introduced an enhanced version of its Network Queuing Environment (NQE) software, NQE 2.0, and this week is demonstrating the product at its UniForum booth (#2125). NQE 2.0 is the latest release of a sophisticated batch processing and automatic load balancing program initially developed by Cray Research for Cray supercomputers and now widely used in UNIX networks including non-Cray platforms. NQE 2.0 automatically distributes a job to the most appropriate resource on heterogeneous networks, whether that resource is a single workstation, workstation cluster, server or a Cray Research superserver or supercomputer system. The software transparently manages file transfers, job queuing and load balancing on the network to complete users jobs most quickly. The initial release of NQE is currently used by customers in a wide range of government, academic and commercial environments, including the automotive, aerospace, petroleum, pharmaceutical and financial services industries. At the Federal Home Loan Mortgage Corp. (Freddie Mac), senior technical analyst J. Alex Murphy notes: "NQE has provided two vital enhancements over NQS of the past. First, it has bridged the gap between our CRAY Y-MP EL systems and the rest of our UNIX environment. Making our Crays readily accessible has allowed us to fully exploit their capability, helping justify our investment in vector processing power. Second, it (NQE) has provided the features that make it industrial strength' and more of a true throughput manager. Financial analysis is very demanding with respect to predictable and reliable turnaround time. NQE helps us ensure that all available resources are on the job." NQE 2.0 further facilitates full distribution of jobs across a network and maximizes the use of available network resources. NQE 2.0 features a job dependency capability that allows users to specify criteria that must be met or events that must occur before a particular job may be initiated. In addition, NQE 2.0 includes a Mosaic interface that allows PC and Macintosh users access to NQE's services. Through NQE's Mosaic interface, users can submit jobs, obtain job status, receive output and access help services from NQE. NQE 2.0 includes application programming interfaces for customizing job status and load balancing, enhanced security features and authentication mechanisms to protect data and control network access and additional data objects in NQE's Network Load Balancer that provide more information about NQE servers and jobs. "With its enriched capabilities, NQE 2.0 creates an environment in which batch jobs are easily managed across heterogeneous UNIX networks," said Leary Gates, CraySoft director. "With NQE 2.0, network-wide server and client administration is intuitive and easy to perform. Users can easily control and monitor job progress without knowledge of their network's topology. For system administrators, NQE 2.0 provides dynamic network load and file usage information useful for monitoring network performance and anticipating potential node failures." NQE 2.0 runs in Solaris, SunOS, IRIX, AIX, HP-UX, DEC-OSF/1 and UNICOS environments. Any platform running these operating systems can be NQE servers, clients or both. Commands and displays are the same across all platforms; users and system administrators see a uniform environment and interfaces regardless of their workstation vendor. NQE 2.0 will be available in the second quarter of 1995 at a list price of $2,875 (U.S.) for a 10-user network license. Like all CraySoft products, NQE 2.0 is available directly from CraySoft at 1-800-BUY-CRAY, craysoft@cray.com, or through Cray Research sales offices worldwide and resellers including SunExpress, Inc., the aftermarket company of Sun Microsystems, Inc. CraySoft, formed in October 1993, focuses on marketing and selling Cray Research networking and application software, compilers, tools and libraries for non-Cray platforms in the open systems market, including workstations, servers and personal computers. Cray Research, Inc. provides leading supercomputing tools to help solve customers' most challenging problems. ### Craysoft, NQE, and Network Queuing Environment are trademarks or registered trademarks of Cray Research, Inc.
